Biography
Josefine Göhmann is a German-Chilean lyric soprano celebrated for her compelling stage presence, refined musicianship and distinctive artistic identity. Her artistic repertoire spans from the early Baroque of Cavalli, Monteverdi, Strozzi and Purcell to the French sound worlds of Debussy, Honegger and Messiaen, while Mozart, Hindemith and Richard Strauss form the core of her artistic profile.
In 2026, she made an acclaimed debut at the Theater an der Wien performing the leading female roles of Lady Magnesia in Weinberg’s Lady Magnesia and Armande in Martinů’s Alexandre bis. Her performances were widely praised for their dramatic presence, stylistic versatility, and the sensuous warmth and precision of her soprano:

Among the roles that have shaped her artistic profile are Monteverdi’s Poppea, performed in the celebrated Klaus Michael Grüber production originally created for the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence during her time at the Opéra de Lyon, and Judith in Bartók’s Bluebeard’s Castle. She has appeared at leading opera houses, festivals and concert venues including the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées (Cefisa/Ermione under Alberto Zedda), the Opéra Royal de Versailles (Poppea, Drusilla, Virtù), the International May Festival Wiesbaden (Erisbe/L’Ormindo, Ariadne/Ariadne, Bellezza/Il trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno), the Festival Printemps des Arts de Monte-Carlo (Deuxième Fille/4 Jeunes Filles), the Berliner Philharmonie (Die Flut by Boris Blacher) and the Slovak Philharmonie (Berio’s Folk Songs).
Her performances have been recorded and broadcast by Deutschlandfunk, Deutschlandfunk Kultur, France Musique, ORF/Ö1, NDR Kultur and rbbKultur.
Alongside her operatic work, Josefine Göhmann maintains a broad concert repertoire ranging from Mozart, Mendelssohn, Schumann and Brahms to Berg, Webern, Honegger, Barber and contemporary composers, including the British composer Iain Bell, who wrote Nora’s Suite for Josefine Göhmann and René Pape.
An accomplished recital artist, she combines a wide-ranging German Lied repertoire—including Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Wolf, Liszt, Strauss, Berg, Hindemith and Rihm—with Spanish song, reflecting her German-Chilean heritage, featuring composers such as Manuel de Falla, Fernando Obradors and Joaquín Turina, as well as French repertoire by Debussy, Honegger and Messiaen. Her recital Maria. Ein Leben, marking the centenary of Hindemith’s Das Marienleben, was broadcast by Deutschlandfunk on Christmas Day 2023, featuring pianist Joseph Middleton.
Josefine’s critically acclaimed debut Lied album réBelles!, conceived and curated by the artist herself together with Leeds International Piano Competition prizewinner Mario Häring, was presented at festivals including Heidelberger Frühling and RheinVokal. The recording received international recognition with nominations for the International Classical Music Awards (ICMA) 2023 and the Opus Klassik 2023 and was featured in the Opernwelt Yearbook 2022 and France Musique Disque Classique du Jour. Her discography also includes Extase, released by Berlin Classics in collaboration with Deutschlandfunk, which was nominated for the Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik.
A graduate of the Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien Hannover, the Opéra de Lyon’s International Opera Studio and the Accademia del Belcanto “Rodolfo Celletti” in Martina Franca, Josefine Göhmann has studied with Sherman Lowe since 2020. Josefine Göhmann has received artistic inspiration through mentorship and masterclasses with Jean-Paul Fouchécourt, Juliane Banse, Thomas Quasthoff, Laura Aikin, Markus Werba, Christina Bock and Petr Popelka.
